Move-In Checklist for Renting in Taiwan
What to do on move-in day in Taiwan: inspection, meter readings, deposit and registering your address.
Inspect and photograph everything
Before moving your things in, photograph the walls, floor, bathroom and every appliance. Test the air conditioner, water heater, water pressure and any included appliances. Note existing damage so you are not blamed for it at move-out.
Record the meter readings
Take a photo of the electricity, water and gas meters on day one. This sets the baseline for your utility bills and prevents disputes over previous tenants' usage.
Confirm the deposit and contract
- Deposit no more than 2 months; keep the receipt or transfer record.
- A signed copy of the contract for each party.
- Agree the channel to contact the landlord and pay rent.
Register your address (if allowed)
If your contract allows it, registering your address (設籍) can matter for rent subsidies and tax. Confirm with the landlord and have it written in the contract.
Set up utilities and internet
Find out how electricity and water are billed, and arrange internet if not provided. Keep all receipts — you will need them at move-out and for any subsidy or tax filing.
