Renting as a Student in Taiwan: Budget & Safety

RHRentHouseTW EditorialUpdated 2026-06

A practical guide for international students renting near campus in Taiwan: budget, viewing and safety.

Set your budget

Student rentals are mostly studios, single rooms or shared flats. Besides rent, budget for the deposit (often 1–2 months), first month and basic furniture. Check the rent around your campus on RentHouseTW so you do not overpay.

Where to look

Start with your university's housing office — it often lists nearby rooms and dorms and can help with contracts, which is safer for newcomers. Listing sites, classmates' sublets and expat groups are also options. Confirm whoever rents to you has the right to do so.

Viewing and safety

  • View in daylight; check light, water pressure and hot water.
  • For partitioned studios, check fire exits, extinguishers and legal partitioning.
  • Check the door lock, intercom and night-time lighting.
  • Use the commute tool to see travel time to campus.

Protect yourself

Deposit no more than 2 months, contract clear on fees and repairs, and photograph the unit at move-in. Give notice and clean properly at move-out to get your deposit back.
