Taiwan Rental Glossary: Key Terms for Foreigners

Common Chinese rental terms you will see when renting in Taiwan, with English explanations.

Property & size

  • 坪 (ping) — area unit, about 3.3 m². Rent is often shown per ping per month.
  • 套房 (taofang) — studio with private bathroom.
  • 雅房 (yafang) — room with shared bathroom.
  • 整層 (zhengceng) — whole floor / whole unit.
  • 公寓 / 華廈 / 大樓 — walk-up / mid-rise with lift / high-rise with lift.

Money

  • 租金 (zujin) — rent.
  • 押金 (yajin) — deposit (max 2 months).
  • 管理費 (guanlifei) — building management fee.
  • 仲介費 (zhongjiefei) — agent fee (about half a month).

People & contract

  • 房東 (fangdong) — landlord.
  • 房客 (fangke) — tenant.
  • 二房東 (er-fangdong) — sublandlord.
  • 租約 (zuyue) — lease contract.
  • 押一付一 — one month deposit, one month rent in advance.

套房 (taofang) is a studio with a private bathroom; 雅房 (yafang) is a room with a shared bathroom and is usually cheaper.
