Renting with Pets in Taiwan: What to Know

RHRentHouseTW EditorialUpdated 2026-06

Finding pet-friendly rentals in Taiwan, deposits, cleaning and how to negotiate with landlords.

Why pets can be hard to rent with

Some landlords worry about scratches, smells, noise and cleaning, so they restrict pets. But pet-friendly listings are increasing. The key is honest communication and showing you will be a responsible tenant.

How to improve your chances

  • Be upfront about the type, number and size of pet — never hide it, as being found out can end the lease.
  • Offer a cleaning fee or slightly higher deposit to show goodwill.
  • Provide proof your pet is vaccinated, neutered and well-behaved.
  • Prioritize listings marked pet-friendly (可養寵物).

Contract and deposit

Get "pets allowed" written into the contract to avoid disputes. The landlord may ask for a higher deposit or cleaning fee, but the deposit is still capped at 2 months. At move-out, clean thoroughly and repair any pet damage to get your deposit back.

FAQ

Can I rent with pets in Taiwan?

Yes, but it depends on the landlord. Be upfront, get "pets allowed" written into the contract, and prioritize pet-friendly listings. A higher deposit or cleaning fee may be requested but the deposit cap is still 2 months.

Will renting with a pet cost more?

Possibly. Landlords may ask for a higher deposit or a cleaning fee, but the deposit cannot exceed 2 months of rent under the law.
